These past couple of days, “Xi Mengyao’s fall” has dominated the trending searches—can only quietly root for her. As a steel ball, if I ever took a tumble too, I’d probably be ready to retire! Luckily, I don’t “fall”—all I do is line up and “roll”!
These past two days, the trending searches have been dominated by “ Xi Mengyao falls wrestling “It’s dominating the screen,”
I can only silently cheer her on.
As a steel ball, if I were to fall over too,
It’s about time he retired!
Luckily, I don’t “fall down”—I just “roll” in line!

You think I’m just a simple… steel ball?
No! I’ve been the backbone of all human life and industry!
From ballpoint pens to giant jet airliners ……
To give a simple example, the tip of a common ballpoint pen uses an ultra-hard steel ball. As you write, the steel ball at the tip rotates continuously, generating friction against the paper and leaving behind ink—much like a miniature printing press. With the increasing variety of ballpoint pens, the diameter of the steel ball has also evolved from… Ranging from 0.18 mm to 1.5 mm. Furthermore, the dimensional accuracy of such steel balls typically needs to reach 0.25 μm, with surface roughness even required to be controlled within 0.02 μm.
As one of the four major components of a bearing, I am widely used in automotive, aerospace, computing, home appliances, construction machinery, and other industries. You may not see me everywhere at all times, but my presence is felt everywhere!
Currently, the main types of industrial steel balls available on the market include nylon balls, copper balls, carbon steel balls, ceramic balls, stainless steel balls, alloy balls, and bearing steel balls.
Bearing quality largely hinges on the precision of its components—inner and outer rings, cages, and balls. However, poor bearing performance is often attributable to the quality of the balls themselves. Consequently, ball manufacturers are placing increasing emphasis on enhancing ball quality, striving to produce ultra‑precise balls that closely approximate perfect sphericity.
So, how exactly are high-precision steel balls manufactured?
1. Materials
Through comprehensive, multi‑dimensional testing of the raw material’s surface quality, microstructure, decarburized layer, chemical composition, tensile strength, and other parameters, we utilize materials that have undergone vacuum deoxidation, contain extremely low levels of non‑metallic inclusions, and exhibit a high degree of cleanliness.
2. Spherical Forming (Cold Forging)
In the spherical forming machine, the wire is cut to a specified length and then compressed between male and female dies mounted on opposing hemispherical sockets, thereby forming the sphere. (At room temperature, the wire is cut to a predetermined length and subjected to cold heading, undergoing plastic deformation to produce a spherical blank.)
3. Light polishing
Clamp the forged steel ball in… Between two hard cast discs, pressure is applied to rotate them, removing burrs and… Surface ring banding, while simultaneously increasing the surface roughness of the steel balls, thereby imparting an initial spherical shape.
4. Heat treatment
After carburizing in a heat‑treatment furnace, the steel balls are quenched and then tempered to achieve a suitable carburized layer, as well as appropriate hardness, toughness, and crush resistance. Today, some technologically advanced manufacturers employ mesh‑belt heat‑treatment lines, using various instruments to precisely control process parameters such as quenching and tempering time and temperature, thereby ensuring consistent and controllable product quality.
5. Strengthen
A machining process in which steel balls are subjected to impact through a vibratory finishing machine, inducing plastic deformation on their surfaces and thereby enhancing surface compressive stress and surface hardness.
6. Hard grinding
Grinding is performed by clamping a steel plate and rotating a grinding wheel under a specified pressure, thereby further enhancing the surface quality and shape of the steel balls.
7. Preliminary research
Two cast-iron preliminary grinding discs are used, and abrasive material is added; under a specified pressure and with mechanical motion, the surface quality meeting the process‑specified accuracy is achieved.
8. Visual inspection for defects
Through 100% manually selected, complemented by the AVKIO flaw detector: defects such as surface imperfections (flat heads, burrs, pad marks, rolling damage, cracks, burns, etc.), shallow subsurface cracks, and internal material flaws are identified using three methods—optical inspection, eddy current testing, and vibration analysis.
9. In-depth research
Similar to the initial lapping process, two cast-iron precision lapping plates are used, with abrasive material added. Under a specified pressure and mechanical motion, excess material is removed, further enhancing the dimensional accuracy and surface quality of the steel balls.
10. Washing and dehydration
The spiral-type washer and lift‑type turnover bins enhance cleaning quality while minimizing surface damage to the steel balls. In addition, the cleaning fluid must be continuously recirculated and filtered to maintain the balls’ cleanliness.
11. Photoelectric ball sorting
Using an optical automatic visual inspection machine, the surface quality of steel balls is assessed to remove products with material defects or machining defects.
12. Finished Goods Inspection
Each batch of steel balls undergoes final inspection in accordance with process requirements, including roundness, hardness, metallography, and residual stress; specific criteria are referenced in the inspection specification.
13. Rust-proof packaging
Apply anti-rust oil, perform spray‑on rust protection, and package according to the customer’s specifications.
At present, the highest level of precision is achieved by the diameters used in computers. Steel balls with diameters of 1/16 inch (approximately 1.6 mm) and 2 mm have an average surface roughness of only 0.002 μm. (1 μm equals 1/1,000 mm.)
So just how high is this level of precision? If we take a diameter of If a 2‑mm steel ball were scaled up to the size of Earth (with an Earth diameter of 12,000 km), its surface irregularities would amount to only about 12 meters. In reality, Earth’s topographic variations exceed 10 kilometers—Mount Everest stands at 8,850 meters, while the Mariana Trench plunges to 11,000 meters. Thus, the extraordinary precision of the steel ball becomes readily apparent.
