Working principle

The drive source engages the sun gear either directly or via a coupling, causing the sun gear to rotate and, in turn, drive the planetary gears mounted on the planet carrier. The entire planetary gear set revolves around the internal ring gear, while the planet carrier is connected to the output shaft, delivering a reduction in speed. Higher reduction ratios are achieved by cascading multiple stages of planetary gearing.

Advantages of planetary gear reducers compared to traditional gear reducers:

1. Compact size and lightweight. Conventional gear reducers are typically bulky and have relatively low transmission efficiency, whereas planetary gear reducers feature a more compact design, minimal backlash, reduced overall dimensions, easy installation, and high load-carrying capacity, making them suitable for a wider range of applications. They are commonly used in servo, stepper, and DC drive systems.

2. High Torque and Impact Resistance: The planetary gear design differs from the operating principle of conventional planetary gears. Traditional gears rely on point contact between just two teeth to transmit motion, with all load concentrated on a small contact area (Figure 1), making them prone to friction and tooth breakage. In contrast, planetary gear reducers feature six larger‑area gear contacts that distribute the load uniformly around the entire circumference (Figure 2). Multiple gear surfaces share the instantaneous impact load evenly, enabling the system to withstand higher torque spikes and shocks.

 

3. From a manufacturing standpoint, planetary gear reducers are more refined and offer higher precision. Their housings are made of ductile cast iron, significantly enhancing both structural rigidity and seismic resistance.

 

4. Planetary gear reducers have a longer service life than conventional reducers and generate relatively lower noise during operation. This is because planetary gear reducers can deliver output torques of up to 2,600,000 Nm, and their gears are subjected to carburizing or carbonitriding treatments, ensuring optimal wear resistance and impact toughness.

 

5. Building on superior manufacturing craftsmanship, planetary gear reducers offer better value for money; however, this advantage largely depends on the required precision and torque capacity of the reducer.

 

 

 

Precision planetary gear reducers can be categorized, according to their gear types, into spur‑gear, helical‑gear, and spiral‑bevel series; each series differs in application scenarios and maximum torque transmission capabilities. Furthermore, for bearings, adequate sealing and protection of the reducer itself are of paramount importance. Due to the compact structure and diverse configurations of planetary gear reducers, a wide range of bearing types are employed, typically including deep groove ball bearings, angular contact ball bearings, tapered roller bearings, stamped needle roller bearings, and double‑row angular contact ball bearings.

Application Solution

 

A. High‑grade bearing steel is employed, complemented by a specialized heat‑treatment process, to achieve high and uniform hardness, excellent wear resistance, and superior contact fatigue strength.

B. In applications without oil-seal protection, the bearing employs a heavy-contact waterproof sealing design, which prevents internal gear grease from leaking into the transmission system under high-temperature operating conditions.

C. For heavy-load operating conditions, a special heavy-duty grease is used; compared with conventional greases, it exhibits significantly superior impact resistance and wear resistance.

D. In applications requiring substantial axial loads, where the service life of conventional thin-section ball bearings fails to meet the load‑carrying requirements and other bearing series cannot accommodate the size constraints, angular contact ball bearings with a special contact angle may be designed.
