  A Roots vacuum pump is a type of vacuum pump without internal compression; its typical compression ratio is very low, so it must be used in conjunction with a forepump for high- and medium‑vacuum applications. It achieves gas displacement and maintains a vacuum by means of the pushing action generated when a pair of lobe‑shaped rotors inside the pump chamber rotate synchronously in opposite directions.

  Roots vacuum pumps have undergone rigorous long-term operation in applications such as chemical plants, plastics processing, fertilizer production, dynamic balancing of steam turbine rotors, and indoor environmental simulation for aerospace. They are also widely used in industries including petroleum, chemicals, metallurgy, and textiles. Vacuum pump components, serving as silencers, are employed to mitigate pump noise.
